The Product:

Post-Carbon City

Museum exhibit and art piece.

Designed to bring awareness of ecological issues and spark conversation for governmental change and environmental impact.

Problem

Carbon output from cities is embedded in everyday life, directly affecting climate change and rising sea levels everywhere in the world. New York City’s sea level rise is projected to reach a high estimate of 11 inches by the 2020s and 31 inches by the 2050s.

Solution

Instead of only investing in mitigation efforts and building for resiliency, what if we let the East and Hudson River submerge parts of Manhattan and rebuild the new city in its surrounding rivers?

Based on New York City, this map was designed as a potential urban landscape to use in case of catastrophe

Early Research

As part of a small, 5-person team, I conducted research on the properties and bio luminescent qualities of certain species of algae. Research was presented in large team meetings via Google Slides.

This stage also included prototyping homemade algae containers that could be integrated into a large-scale museum exhibit. The finished containers required regular disassembly and reassembly capabilities, without harming living algae inside.

Worked with a second, 13-person team to research, disassemble, and reconstruct old car tires. Process included presenting research to team leads (Mitchell Joachim and others, using Google Slides), tire disassembly, dissection, and re-integration of old car tires into a new exhibit construction. Re-integration also included tracking tire patterns so they could be best integrated into a cohesive final urban plan.

Post Carbon City

Contributed to the early design of the exhibit. Details of final version can be found on Terreform ONE's website, here.

Findings

Unlike the other work on this portfolio, my findings for Terreform ONE are considered classified.
